Common Realities and Fallacies Concerning Autism

There are a lot of wrong preformulated informations about mental disorders brought about by misinformation; autism is just one of the many disorders that have endured its share of misconceptions. Most of the myths are based on incomplete accuracy and some hyperboles that are not helpful in terms of helping autistic individuals properly amend to different environments. Here are some of the minimal facts that show up the usual stereotypes regarding autism:

  • Fallacy #1 – Autism allows a child to develop an extremely advanced understanding of intricate guide, mathematics, or even music. A child’s autism has nothing to do with his or her appearance, and autistic children don’t frequently act academically above what’s considered normal for their age. Most people who have autism and are simultaneously are savants focus greatly on one skill group, which is the reason for the improvement of that skill.
  • Autistic people are dependents and cannot function normally in life with no support from other people. There is an unsmiling misconception that when a child is analyzed with autism, the parents are stuck with the responsibility of caring for a mentally retarded invalid. Nothing can be farther from the truth as autistic children do have a great possibility of being able to function normally if given the appropriate humanistic therapy and support that they need especially at an early age. Humanistic Sandtray Therapy is a dynamic type of psychotherapy that lets clients express their innermost emotions by means of metaphor and symbol.
  • Autistic children are not completely powerless to feel emotions and form rapport or emotional ties and bonds with other people. The fact is that autistic people can develop an intimate connection with people who are within their small loop of interaction. While they may not be able to relate to the majority of society and may encounter difficulties in communicating with other people, they are capable of caring and feeling emotion headed for the people who surround them on a daily basis. It’s a fact that autistic individuals can actually develop relationships albeit with smaller groups of individuals; they are able to form friendships, get married, and maintain happy relationships.
  • Misunderstanding #4 – Autistic people have consistent indications in all cases. Even if people with autism have complexities with social interaction and communication, they do have characters and even their signs and levels of functionalities are different from one another. Different children have unique levels of functionality and personality and hence exhibit different kinds of autism-related symptoms.
  • Autistic individuals are over and over again unable to focus on social communication and instead focus on themselves, with their interest being oftentimes obsessive. Play therapy is an example of something that could work for autistic individuals; there has to be some adjustments to the play therapy, of course, since autistic children don’t play like other children do. Autistic children don’t fool around with toys in the same way that other children without autism do. Different games that encourage interaction between the child and toys, and in due course involving the child and other people will be helpful in helping autistic children understand how social interaction operates. Therapists are trained professionals that know how to use play in order to help the child recognize the toy in a different way and draw the child out of his or her self-absorption.

Parents are encouraged to participate in play therapy; in fact, play therapy will be more effective if parents understand it and do it with their child outside of the therapy sessions.
